Welcome

Welcome to the home page of booklocker. A work in progress project. Booklocker will be a home to display books you want to sell, what you see here is a frontend laboratory. The vision will expand beyond this. My dream would be a place where you could store your small collection of books you want to sell in a public repository, a locker, much like you could buy drinks at a vending machine, securely and efficiently.

Where did I get this idea?

The concept for this project came from my observations in public spaces and a sense of changing cultures. It seems to me like literacy is on the decline, physical books are becoming a scarcer resource. I want to expand on the practice of small public book structures holding books where you can take books and feel free to contribute back.

Other thoughts, "Manifesto"

As I look around in public spaces, libraries, bookstores, secondhand stores. I see connecting threads that made me want to pursue this idea into a project. Public libraries are turning away from their book offerings, why are public libraries doing this? Literacy rate may be going downhill but is there a larger disinterest in written text? While people still use books at libraries, public libraries are showing more interest in "digital" services, activities outside books. Do they just want to free up floor space for other activity? I imagine a future where public libraries will simply clear out book inventory. Gone will be shelves. Then there are the bookstores that still stay around. These bookstores mark up the price on their books, don't offer many sales, sales are limited in scope, discounts aren't deep, books on sale are limited. What about the secondhand stores that have books for sale? They are very random, you can't really get a sense of inventory. Inventory moves slowly, you may be looking for specific books but you are still limited, and these are centralized middlemen that hold onto these books that will possibly move them around.

General Philosophies

Sell vs Loan Books

Booklocker will offer the opportunity to either be a seller of books or a lender of books. The sell side will be a simple means of buying and selling books. The loan side will act as a lower cost opportunity to loan books between users.
